Unfinished Work: A Message From Our Executive Director

Two Habitat for Humanity families are working hard toward the completion of their homes in the affiliate’s Northstone neighborhood. They’ve completed most of their sweat equity hours, have paid their down payments and attended homeownership preparation classes. The only thing standing in the way is the funding needed to complete their homes.

Mahongany Smith and FamilyFor Mahongany the wait for her house has been long.  “I was very excited because this is my third time trying to get into the program. I’m ready to become a homeowner and to be able to call this home mine!” Mahongany, who works at Hickory’s Kingston Residence, is the smiling face that greets residents and guests for breakfast and lunch. She and her two daughters are currently living in a crowded 2-bedroom apartment and look forward to having their own yard in which to play. Mahongany also looks forward to the quiet that comes when there isn’t an upstairs tenant walking around.

Northstone Subdivision

northstoneActivities continue in our new Northstone Subdivision in Hickory.  This subdivision is Habitat’s first “mixed income” neighborhood and consists of houses for sale on the open market and traditional Habitat homes.

In the summer of 2016, two new Habitat homes will begin and construction will continue on the market rate homes.  The plan is four house starts July-December and four more in January-June.
